Ming-choi spent one week in Australia during his summer holiday in 2011. He wanted to experience the cool weather there while he got a lot of cheerful memories. Let’s share his trip through his words…
I was very happy that I could again go for a trip in this summer holiday (in 2011). This time I would need to travel 7-8 hours on a flight to Australia. At the beginning, I was worried if I could stand this long haul flight physically; another worry was endemic illness brought on by the winter climate in Australia. I have suffered from these illnesses during my previous trips. It was lucky that I overcame all these issues and had a smooth journey.
When my family and I stepped out of the airport, I immediately felt an unexpected chill. I could also feel the peaceful silence of Melbourne in early morning, as well as the friendly attitude of local people; both these brought some warmth to me. Make-A-Wish® Hong Kong arranged pick-up service for us, so we met our guide, Mr. Chiu, who for a while accompanied us on tour. Shortly after that, he helped us check-in at the hotel. Mr. Chiu was very humorous. I asked him why he migrated to Australia from Hong Kong; he said that he had worried that Hong Kong would be seriously hit by financial turmoil after 1997.Therefore, he and his family went to Melbourne, and they have lived there ever since.
He said he and his family had arrived in Australia in 1997. For this reason, Mr. Chiu also said that he dared not to come back to Hong Kong for fear that he could no longer adapt back to the Hong Kong climate.
The most exciting experience from this Melbourne trip was that I could have a chance to “smell the taste of fresh sea water”; I could also shout loudly while roaming the seaside. I felt so amazing! However, I was saddened that I could not drink the locally-produced red wine which is very famous in Australia. This was due to my young age.
Last but not least, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all donors. They helped achieve my wish to travel to Australia. Thank you!
