A Dream Castle

Princess Tung-tung’s Dream Castle

Four-year-old Tung-tung has sweet and pleasant personalities. She always wears a radiant smile and is very friendly to everyone she meets. Despite her age, she knows exactly what she wants for herself.

Tung-tung sleeps with her parents, even though a room is reserved for her use. Until she is ready to sleep on her own, this room is used as a temporary storage. One day her little buddy invited Tung-tung to play at her home. Her buddy was no longer sleeping with her parents and has her own bedroom. After the visit, Tung-tung began to think it may be time for her to learn to be independent. Thus, she told Make-A-Wish® Hong Kong (MAWHK) that she wished to have a room makeover.

After receiving Tung-tung’s request, an interior designer volunteered her time to help put Tung-tung’s idea into a floor plan. A generous individual donated the cost for repainting her room in pink and yellow. The furniture was sponsored by Ikea. It only took a few days to finish the painting and get the paint to dry. It was too good to be true!

Her parents and MAWHK staff secretly agreed to have her room finished and decorated as a surprise for Tung-tung. It was arranged that Tung-tung spent time at her grandparents’ home and returned home when everything was complete. After busily decorating the room with colourful balloons, her aunt, cousin and MAWHK staff hid in her room while her mother used wrapping paper to cover the bedroom entrance. Tung-tung’s father had been sent to bring her home when everything was ready.

Tung-tung and her father finally arrived home. At first, she was curious to see the wrapping papers covering her bedroom door. Then, her mother signaled her to tear it off. It only took her a second to rip the paper away. When she slowly opened the door, her mouth dropped open in surprise! The empty room was now filled with balloons and beautifully furnished; they were welcoming their new owner!

The first thing she saw was a white study desk, with a white opaque glass study lamp. On top of the desk there were three panels of bookshelf panels in white and red with two lovely stuffed animals sitting comfortable on the shelves to greet their new mistress. Next to the desk was a white wooden frame bed with a bed cover of light green trees and cartoon prints. Opposite the bed was a 3-door white wardrobe with a full-size–built-in mirror on one of the doors. An artificial white furry mat was placed at the window sill. On top of it were a pair of white cotton cushions with bright floral embroidery and a pair of purple and yellow flannel cushions, to create a cozy reading corner.

Since Tung-tung wanted to have a princess dress, a pink satin sleeping beauty dress with golden tiara were specially purchased as her room warming gifts. When she found her dream dress hanging by the window, she was so delighted. She put it on right away. Everyone there was eager to have their photo taken with the Princess Tung-tung in her newly decorated “castle”. On this happy occasion, she even conferred on her cousin the title Prince Lap Lap and her parents as King and Queen.
